Across the country, COVID-19 has disrupted networks for care and systems for survival.
Here at home, Washington DC has announced funding cuts for services to homeless residents, just as the one-two punch of the oncoming winter and a new surge in COVID cases threatens them further.
HIPS received a 15% cut to our needle exchange and overdose prevention programs for 2021
– in the middle of a pandemic and spike in overdoses.
Your donation today will be put into action immediately, providing meals, non-judgmental harm reduction services, community engagement, and advocacy for folks in street economies at a time it's needed most.
We envision a world where all people engaged in sexual exchange and drug usecan use their power to live healthy and self-determined lives free from stigma, violence, criminalization or oppression.

HIPS is needed now more than ever
I am so proud to be involved in this great organization. I’m constantly struck by the similarities in the challenges HIPS clients face to those of many of the people I fly 1000s of miles to work with. And similarly, I am in awe of the resilience, determination and love that abounds despite the abuse and neglect that these folks face. It’s amazing.
Last year, HIPS began a bold new chapter, moving into the Center for Health and Achievement. This space has allowed HIPS to provide an array of non-judgmental, appropriate services including as mental health, drug treatment, legal services and medical care.
Since the Center opened its doors in August 2015, drop-in traffic has increased fourfold as the Center offers basic services like laundry and showers - necessities we take for granted. HIPS care and love for its clients have also improved individual's health. 95% of those tested positive for Hepatitis C (through HIPS HCV testing program) are now receiving treatment. HIPS has brought more than 300 HIV+ clients back into care and helped them reduce their viral loads (clients often abandon care because of stigma and discrimination). In 2016 alone, HIPS distributed more than 250,000 needles and 250,000 condoms, making a huge contribution to reducing HIV transmission in DC.
HIPS continues to meet the needs of those marginalized in an ever-changing DC, making sure people are not discarded, devalued or left behind. As the services expand, the needs grow too. Many of these bedrock, community-building activities are not funded through grants. Community lunches, outreach, hotline services provide a lifeline and community. We rely on volunteers to run most of these activities, but there are other costs. The outreach van needs maintenance, the water bills are quite high, and that well-used washer will need to be replaced.
Your contribution can help HIPS continue to provide and expand services to meet the many needs of its clients and the community.
As you consider your end of year charitable donations, please consider supporting HIPS.
