Since 1993, HIPS has promoted the health, rights and dignities of people on the streets of Washington, DC.We believe that those engaged in sex work, sex trade, and drug use should be able to live healthy, self-determined, and self-sufficient lives free from stigma, violence, criminalization or oppression. We achieve this through engaging sex workers, drug users and our communities in challenging structural barriers to health, safety, and prosperity. HIPS is the most comprehensive organization serving homeless LGBTQ individuals in Washington DC.
I first learned of HIPS in 2000 while watching a friend assemble baggies of condoms, lube, and candy in her freshman dorm room. Shortly thereafter, I began volunteering, and even interned with HIPS during college. I credit HIPS for showing me my professional path to public health as it taught me more about the field than any schooling I've received. Seventeen years on, HIPS continues to blow my mind: evolving, growing, and always putting their clients first. I am so excited to be contributing to this incredible organization as a new board member. Please join me in supporting HIPS too!Donate
