    Help HIPS Thrive

    Copy_of_IMG_4681.JPG

We see the discrimination and challenges our clients face.
We respect their right to safe space and self-determination.
We offer a compassionate and caring environment to achieve personal growth.

Will you support us? Will you support them?

Everyone deserves a safe place to shower and have a meal.
Everyone deserves a safe place to sleep.
Everyone deserves a life free from violence.
Everyone deserves a community they can rely on.

With your help, HIPS provides that. With your continued support, we can keep doing it.

    Please donate today!

You can also easily set up a Pink Membership recurring donation here and support our work throughout the year.

Since 1993, HIPS has promoted the health, rights and dignities of people on the streets of Washington, DC.
We believe that those engaged in sex work, sex trade, and drug use should be able to live healthy, self-determined, and self-sufficient lives free from stigma, violence, criminalization or oppression. We achieve this through engaging sex workers, drug users and our communities in challenging structural barriers to health, safety, and prosperity. HIPS is the most comprehensive organization serving homeless LGBTQ individuals in Washington DC.

HIPS offers comprehensive services designed to empower individuals on the streets to set and reach their goals towards healthy, happy, self-determined lives.  This includes a full service drop in at our Center for Health and Achievement, syringe access, Hep C, HIV and wellness care at our walk-in clinic, and a full service day and overnight outreach program.  HIPS makes over 8,000 contacts on the streets each year and hosts 1,200 visits to our drop in every month.   For an up to date list of the services we offer click here.

Join us as we Dream Big, Love Hard and Fight Back in 2017.

Our community needs HIPS, and HIPS needs you.

    Volunteer with HIPS!

Our Fall Volunteer Training is now closed. Please check back for our Winter Training!

We are looking for dedicated, empathetic volunteers to support the goals and mission of HIPS in myriad ways, including on our Outreach Van, Hotline, through fundraising efforts, and even administrative work. Volunteers are integral to the work of HIPS.

We're looking forward to working together!

How to Become a HIPS Volunteer 101:

    1. Fill out our when applications are open. Your completed application reserves you a spot in the orientation. Space is limited, so reserve your spot now!

    2. Come to Orientation! This is required for everyone who wants to volunteer, and is a great chance for you to meet us and find out more about the organization and harm reduction! Ideally, this orientation will help you decide if you want to commit to volunteering at HIPS, and which volunteer roles you're interested in.

PLEASE NOTE: There are no make-up sessions for our orientation. If you cannot attend an orientation, we'll keep you on the list for the next orientation. We hold training in the fall, winter, spring, and summer. Please use the form at the bottom of this page to be added to our email list.

    3. Interview with the outreach team! Our trainings have limited spots. We want to meet you and make sure you'd be a good fit (and that we're a good fit for you). We hold trainings three times per year, and you can definitely interview more than once for the volunteer roles you want!

    4. Attend all sessions of training for the volunteer position(s) that you accept!
